I know this has been posted before, but my question is a little different than you might think...

When the Iphone 3G came out, AT&T allowed the Iphone 2G to be used
without a data plan.

I just preordered the Iphone #3G S to replace my iphone 3G and would
like to give my Iphone 3G to my wife but only if I don't have to shell
out an extra $30 bucks a month for the data plan.

Does anyone know now that the Iphone 3G S is out if AT&T will allow the
iphone 3G without a data plan, just as a phone. I know you can use
a blackberry without the data plan, just as a regular phone.

Thanks

Doubt it, considering they are still actively selling the 3g. However, I wonder something.

I know you can use the iPhone 3g without a data plan and AT&T can add it at any time, but has anybody actually had it added to their account? I've never heard a case of them actually doing anything about it. Anybody know?

I have used my 3G without the data plan. When I came back from a 5 month trip, and had my phone reactivated, it did not have data for awhile. The only problem without having data is that you will NOT and I repeat, will NOT have voicemail. They are two in one. Voicemail and data are paired together. So no data=no voicemail. Don't ask me why.

If your wife has a normal phone she can just put her sim card into the iPhone, transfer sim contacts and just use it to call and text.

And you mean visual voicemail
