iPhone 3G: won't connect to comptuer, will connect to plugin

I've got an iPhone 3G.

  • I've tried connecting it to 3 different laptops - it doesn't acknowledge any of them; not even to recharge it
  • I've successfully connected my iPod to two of these laptops with the same cable
  • I've successfully connected the iPhone to a plug-in & car charge adapter, using the same cable

Any ideas?
 
I have rebooted the iPhone

I should mention that I have rebooted the iPhone a couple of times.
