I don't understand how Apple can possible validate a £100 increase for just an extra 16GB of storage when I can get similar and sometimes even bigger storage for just £30.

So why is there such an increase in price but for so little gain?

Millions of people bought them, and continue to buy them. In a free market, that's all the justification required.

You as the consumer can decide whether you feel the extra cost is justified or, since you already know you can get bigger storage for less, if you would rather go that route instead.

That's not a good example, since here you are just paying for increased capacity. However, like mentioned earlier it's called capitalism and Apple does this will all there products. You want a nicer screen, then you have to go straight for the MBP vs. the MB.

One could make the argument that you've already paid Apple for all the bells and whistles in the first $199. (Price of a 16gb 3GS)

We're not talking about usb drives, its phone internall memory.
To some people the extra 16GB is worth the price increase. What other cellphone do you know has 32GB storage?
