My girlfriend got her iPhone 3GS about 8 months ago (brand new) and has been using it happily since. She's never plugged it into a computer nevermind synced it with itunes.

I was about to upgrade her software from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 (not 4.1, it's too sluggish) so I plug it into itunes and it comes up with the "Welcome to your iPhone" screen. It takes me through the registration process up to the point where it says "set up as new phone, or restore from backup" (of which there is only backups of my own phone)

First of all I don't understand how it can even have been activated without plugging into itunes (they did it for her in the store, she says).

Secondly, If I set it up this way — it's going to wipe the phone, right? There's no way to back it up or do anything to it in itunes without wiping it?

I'm not talking about syncing or managing the music, contacts or calendar, i'm talking about just even getting it to display the phone and contents in itunes.

Any ideas?
