Iphone 3gs & ATT

I updated my firmware a while ago and now that I left the US for 4 months, I wanted my Iphone 3GS to unlock, but I was told that is not possible. I understand there is no unlock for Baseband 05.12.
What if I restore it? What is a Baseband, wouldn't it be restored too?
And does anybody know if AT&T allows me to discontinue the contract for 3 months?

P.S. Am I ~censored~ for life or is it reasonable that there will be a Baseband 05.12 Crack soon?

Baseband cannot be downgraded on 3GS, there is no unlock for 5.12.xx

There will be a new unlock once 4.0 is out.
Wait till then.
