iPhone 3GS back up on iTunes issue

Hi, I am having trouble backing up my iPhone 3GS (haven't updated to iOS 4) on iTunes (9.2). Syncing and everything else is fine but when it backs up it's only very little progress on the progress bar completion (maybe 5%). It never goes pass 5% it just stays there for a very long time. I've waited hours on end and no luck. I tried deleting a large majority of my apps and still no luck. please help shed some light on this. My last back up is from January 31st and I want to sync my iPhone 4 and avoid losing a lot of data. Thanks in advance!
