My iPhone 3gs battery was at 80% then dropped to 17% within 5 minutes, while in my pocket. Approximately 5 minutes later it shut down due to dead battery. I plugged it in and when it came back on it was at 77%.

I usually have wi-fi turned on and do not have this problem. This is the first instance of this performance.

The unit is not searching for service or out of service area.

Any thoughts on this?

one of mine used to do that, I ended up having it exchanged at the genius bar. It did take some convincing on my part though, since I didn't know how to trigger the issue.
