iPhone 3GS buttons messed up?

I didn't drop my phone, it was working fine when i went to sleep and left it charging. Now the power button doesn't work and the sound control on the left to switch it to silent doesn't work. Any help/suggestions/diagnosis that my phone is hopeless?

That cable that deals with these functions is pretty straight forward to replace and only costs a few dollars.
