iPhone 3gs charging problem

Hi, I have a bit of complex issue, but I will start with the basic's first and narrow them down. I have a 2-3 year old mac book pro 2G's 677mgz. This was the model right before they switched to the black keys.

1) there are 2 usb ports and one firewire.

q1) are these USB/firewire ports capable of charging my iPhone3Gs?
