Make the custom 6.1.3 ipsw using sn0wbreeze

Jailbreak it tethered. Once jailbroken, open cydia and install p0sixspwn and that will make your jailbreak untethered

I am trying to figure out the relationship between wanting to retain the existing baseband and using the phone as Car Ipod.

There is only on reason why it is useful to retain baseband and that is for unlocking the phone with Ultrasn0w. If you are not an Ultrasn0w unlocker then forget about the baseband.

is sn0wbreeze stable?

True that.. but nonetheless its still important to preserve the baseband.... so that it can still be used a phone.. though now more like an ipod..

you need to remove the gs.apple.com from your host file to restore with the custom ipsw for 6.1.3

make sure the device is in pwned DFU mode and that your itunes is 11.0.5 or older
