iPhone 3GS data connection

Anyone else having problems with their 3GS getting data connection? I can't seem to stay connected. I switch back and forth from Edge and 3G and while on a phone call I can't seem to get either. Previously I never left 3G where I live, now I can't seem to get it at all...will restoring help or am I SOL?

Now there's a weird "o" where 3G or E would have showed before.

By the way, the "weird O" is the GPRS signal.

That is the slowest of all data signals. Edge is the second, and 3G is the fastest....so far.
