iPhone 3GS Dead in lockout mode

I plugged in my 3GS with 25% charge. Next morning, screen had dead battery symbol (black battery with small red bar on left, and lightning bolt below). When I pulled the plug out, screen went entirely blank. Won't turn on, hard reset does nothing, very frustrating. No physical damage, quit working overnight. Other chargers don't work. Thousands of posts on Internet with same problem.
