iPhone 3GS for iPod?

Hey guy got a question might be a noob question, I'm trying to turn my old iPhone 3GS to an iPod use only to go on runs. I have iPhone 4S now. The iPhone 3GS was my mom old phone she got the new iPhone 4 which was mine so she gave me back the iPhone 3GS I reset all the setting on the phone so it can be a brand new phone but not it says its lock need to add a a Sim card in it. Do I need to jailbreak it now unlock it now? Thanks for you guys help
