I have had my 3GS for over a year now, and (most noticably) over the last couple of months, it has gotten really slow. I jailbroke it the other day (tethered on 5.1) but even before that it was slow as anything. It has been jailbroken numerous times before and when it had started getting slow I blamed the jailbreak, but even going a couple of months without one it was still the same. It is jailbroken now but I hardly have any tweaks/cydia apps installed.

I'm hoping an app similar to 'CleanMyMac' will speed it up but I am not aware of one. Any suggestions? App Store or Cydia? Mostly because Whenever it has been restored I have always used the old backup and wonder if that might contain loads of useless files that could be slowing down the memory??

I have tried the obvious things, even before jailbreaking, such as restoring and closing background apps etc but no luck. It's the 8GB 3GS (new bootrom I believe). Could it be the newer firmware updates that has made it so slow? I bought it on iOS 4 and it was fine back then!

Help appreciated.. thanks

*Edit: Also, the 'Other' section displayed in iTunes when the iPhone is connected has reached 2.5GB. I have no idea what this is, I know some of it is most likely to do with the jailbreak, but no way can it be 2.5GB, and before the jailbreak this was still at a large size, not quite 2.5GB but it was still over 1GB. I can't possibly think what's taking up all of this space. Is it old files etc stored by the iPhone from countless times installing/removing apps or something?
