I recently bought a 3GS off craigslist cheap because the home button doesn't work and it was stuck with the plug into itunes screen (picture attached)

I try to restore to 4.1 and it goes through everything and then it itunes says it will automatically show up in 10 seconds and counts down. Then the iPhone reboots of course but then it goes to the same screen as before and itunes says it has detected a phone in recovery mode...

It's stuck in recovery mode. Download tinyumbrella (4.1.4 is the latest). Run it and click the “Kick Device Out of Recovery” button. It should restart normally now.
