iphone 3GS in Israel

I am traveling to Israel soon for 2 weeks. I'd love to be able to use my iPhone without huge expense. So far my best estimate is to switch all settings to use as an iPod touch there, and to bring an old GSM cell and rent a SIM card there. I do not know how to unlock my iPhone 3GS which has the new 4 software on it. I am curious if anyone has unlocked there 3GS iPhone, used an Israeli sim card (how much does it cost), and then come back and used there original AT&T sim card with no problems.
