I have a brand new o2 locked iPhone 3gs straight from the apple store that needs unlocking as it will be a present for my father, who is on t-mobile.

After doing much research, from what I understand I have a newer bootrom meaning jailbreaking will not be very easy or even possible.

I am unable to find a method of unlocking from home without jailbreaking first. Is there any way to jailbreak this iphone or unlock it?

baseband 5.16.05

Thanks in advance for any help

Update:

Even though the phone is locked to o2, it was given to me straight from the apple store and was never registered. The previous o2 user has since switched to another provider and o2 are claiming they cannot unlock it since the IMEI number is not linked to any user / phone number.

In other words you're SOL.
You cant offiically unlock it and if you attempt to install the ipad bb to unlock then you will ruin the phone and fry the baseband, wifi and bluetooth.

What if I set up a PAYG o2 account and register the phone to it then immediately request an unlock from o2? would that work?

OK finally got this to work, took a few failed attempts. firstly my own fault as there wasn't £15 credit on the sim, and then again for an unknown reason, 3rd time lucky though, phone is unlocked.
