iPhone 3GS iOS4 Jailbreak

Apologies if this has been asked before, I did a quick search but only found contradicting answers.

I'm currently running 3.1.3 on a spirit jailbroke 3GS and run windows.

What's the best/easiest way to get the iOS4 upgrade and jailbreak? I'd much rather start from a clean install if possible and then jailbreak.

Does spirit work for iOS4 or is there a better alternative.

You can downgrade to 3.x, jailbreak with Redsn0w, then upgrade with a custom firmware made with PwnageTool.

Note: PT has not yet been officially updated for 4.0, but there are instructions for modifying it to work with the 4.0 GM candidate.
 
fyi...i did this with my 3GS, and then downgraded it back to 3.1.3 jb...and i never saw my 3G service again, it was always 'no service' and 'searching...'

just sayin...

im waiting for the official release from both apple and dev team..
 
i never said i jb it...i put ios4 on it. sorry if my wording screwed ya up.

lizard...you always have nice things to say about people, stick to helping out...stop judging, this isnt high school.

edit: that post did make no sense now that i reread it.

The only one confused here is you.

Nobody here was talking about upgrading to 4.0. We were all talking about jailbreaking. You made your post in a thread about jailbreaking iOS 4 and in response to my detailed post on how to jailbreak 4.0, and in it you said "fyi...i did this with my 3GS...." How could not mean that you jailbroke your phone on 4.0? What antecedent did you intend "this" to have?

If all you meant to say was that you upgraded your phone to 4.0 official and couldn't get a signal after downgrading, then that is completely irrelevant to this thread!

I wasn't judging, just stating fact based on your posts.

Some of us stay jailbroken for months and months even thru firmware upgrades (3GS from JB 3.1.2 to JB iOS 4) and never need to post "help me" posts.

Others have a new dilemma every week, can't stay jailbroken, constant restores, etc.

It is what it is.

ok i'll try to make a precise a direct question:
i have a

- jailbroken 3gs
- old bootroom
- fw 3.1.2
- baseband 05.11.07
- itunes 9.2
- osx 10.6.4

what is the best way to go to jailbroken ios 4 without problems???

in the past i used already redsnow pwnagetool and blackrain and i never had problems!

my advice is for you both to read....
Latinist has already stated that PT has not been updated for 3Gs yet but can be modified to work with the 4.0 GM... all the way back in post 4.
you have no other options.
 
Pwnage tool 4.01 from iPhone dev team blog.

So skill83,we seems to be able to upgrade now, but i have used Blackrai1n to jailbreak, what did you use, it sais i doesn´t work with Spirit, what about blackra1n?
 
i made with pwnage tool before and with pwnage tool now. anyway if u have 3.1.2 with blackrain u can always put 3.1.2 with pwnage and after 4.0 with pwnage anyway i cannot understand why u cannot use pwnage if u used blackrain.... i read that just people that used spirit cannot use pwnage... anyway try to post a question in the comment to the post of pwnage 4.0.1 of the blog of devteam.... for sure they will answer u.... anyway for the first time i had a lot of problem to put in dfu mode and after it wasn't working the restore with itunes so i connected my iphone to the computer i opened itunes i old home+sleep until the device shutted down and after i released just the sleep button until the screen connect to itunes appeared on the phone and after that everything worked
 
Restore

Problem is that I have already downloaded 4.0, so if I try to restore in iTunes it will probably upgrade to 4.0.. Am I right?
 
yes you should put off the 4.0 firmware from /Users/yourname/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates, after make a custom firmware with pwnage tool from a 3.1.2 original firmware and after from itunes put the custom 3.1.2 firmware... anyway is better that u ask from devteam blog for sure they know exactly the answer to your question,....
 
Pwnage tool worked for me.
I was on 3.1.3 3GS with old bootrom jailbroken with spirit.
I Downgraded to 3.1.2 using this guide.
I Jailbroke 3.1.2 using Blackra1n.
Created a custom firmware with pwnage tool, it would not update the phone in DFU mode but it worked in restore mode.
I would say hold off on updating because a lot of jailbroken apps have not been update and crash the phone or just don't work at all.
