I have a jailbroken 3GS
-Running 4.3.1
-First 5 digits of Serial # are 87939, so I think that's the old bootrom
-Modem Firmware is 5.16.02

I am taking my phone overseas for 3 months and need to purchase a local SIM card, so I need to unlock my iPhone.

Is this as simple as installing Ultrasn0w via Cydia or are there other steps I need to perform?

Thank you for your help.

The 5.16 baseband cannot be unlocked. The highest baseband on the 3GS that can be unlocked is 5.13.

There is a way to unlock your phone but you need to be aware of some drawbacks. The main issues will be loss of GPS and inability to do a standard restore from Apple you must use custom firmware in the future.

If you are prepared to accept these they you install the IPAD baseband with Redsn0w and then unlock with Ultrasn0w.

Suggest you read tutorial first.

I heard somewhere that I could update my baseband to a version that will allow me to unlock without the GPS and restore drawbacks. Is that possible?
