iPhone 3GS Maps displays directions in KM, not Miles

Since I purchased the phone in 12/09, my native Maps app has provided all directions in KM instead of Miles, which is not helpful since I live in NY. Any known fix for this issue? I believe the phone came with 3.1.1, and I've since updated through to 3.1.3, but the problem persists. I've tried to "shock" the system by switching to another Region, but that hasn't worked when I switch back to US.

Any ideas?
