iPhone 3GS - No calls or texts

Hi I purchased a second hand iPhone 3GS from eBay and arrived today. The internet works fine, as does email etc. however, I cannot send / receive texts or calls. I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to sort this?

Sorry, I cannot edit my post.

The problem has been solved now, the phone had been blacklisted as lost or stolen and so I cannot make calls or send texts.
