I was thinking the phone may just have broken hardware but im not sure.

any help is appreciated. :)

I have this problem, and I've just figured out what it means after downgrading from 5.0.1 to 4.3, it means your IMEI is blocked by all Carriers within the country you're in, so you'll see the carrier but never get signal

I haven't downgraded anything though? And as far as I know is wasn't before

It means in the country you live, you basically have a glorified iPod Touch. It will not work on any carriers in that country since the IMEI has been blacklisted. It was most likely reported stolen.

Also, what version of iOS are you running? What is your baseband? You can find this info in Settings>General>About. Modem Firmware is the baseband.

Yep, it worked before but seems like now it has been reported lost/stolen and blacklisted.
Ever heard about people selling stolen items on CL?:D
Call your carrier to verify that the IMEI number is clean or not.
You can always sell it to someone outside that region if you dont want to have it as an ipod touch.

OK thank you, would calling the carrier get me arrested though for possibly handling stolen goods?

No, I highly doubt that.
They will just tell you if the particular IMEI has been blacklisted or not.
Just tell them you want to double check before you purchase it or something. No big deal, cellphones get lost all the time.
