I was trying to restore my iPhone 3GS to 4.0.1 with a custom IPSW last night but it kept getting stuck at about 98% complete and wouldn't move no matter what.
iTunes was also stuck at about 98%, if I disconnected the iPhone it would show the steve jobs recovery logo and could not force it out by using blackra1n, TinyUmbrella, but I didn't try to use quickpwn.
How did I fix it?
I noticed that when I had my iPhone 3GS restore with about half bar and then plugged in my iPhone 4 to charge, it would instantly kick the iPhone 3GS out of the restore process, returning it to the recovery screen.
It then occurred to me that I should do that as soon as it gets to 98% and stays there for a couple minutes to assure the firmware is installed.
I did just that and sure enough, my iPhone 4 saved my iPhone 3GS from being royal boned by whatever problem it had!
P.S.
I was a bit on the sad side because my iPhone 3GS is out of warranty.
Conclusion:
1. Put iPhone 3GS into recovery mode
2. Restore to custom firmware or official firmware (both failed to install)
3. After the firmware restore bars get to about 98% and refuses to go beyond that for about 5 mins, plug in another iDevice (I only tried iPhone 4)
4. Soon iTunes will change the dialog box to say something else.
5. Unplug iDevice, not the one stuck in recovery mode. dialog box will change again
6. It should force iTunes to restore your stuck device!
