We used to be able to check iphone 3G part numbers (MB048LL/A, etc...) and whether the part numbers are locked to carriers from this apple site.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

Seems like the page has changed and we can't check part numbers anymore.

I'm about to get a factory unlocked 3GS overseas. Is there any other way to check whether the 3GS part number I'm purchasing is/isn't locked to carrier?

Yea they updated the page and we lost the part number details. I have not seen a replacement since the page changed on July 2.

Just a reminder: You will not have a warranty in the US on an iPhone that you purchase from another country. The iPhone warranty is only valid in the country where that individual part number is designated to be sold. You will have to return it to the country of purchase for an warranty service. :(
