iPhone 3GS Screen off and Restore Problem!! Please Help

I have been using my 3GS perfectly fine and then all of a sudden my screen went white, then stopped working! I have encountered the white screen on other devices before and I know about hardware resets and simple things like that. The device has been but wasnt isnt jailbroken at the moment and when i try to restore in iTunes i get;

iTunes could not connect to this phone the service did not start properly on the device

The device is definatley on, because iTunes recognises it and the vibrate switch works so...

PLEASE HELP ME!!
