iPhone 3GS Signal Symbol Disappearing when on call

Hi Everyone

I've done a search in the forums and can't find any answers to this, so thought I'd start a new thread.

Whenever I dial a number or take a call, as soon as I hit 'Call' or take an incoming call, the 3G, E or GPRS symbol disappears from the notification bar at the top of the screen. Does this happen to anyone else and is this normal? If it's not normal, are there any suggestions on fixing this issue?
