i recently bought a new iphone 3gs off craigslist, unlocked/jailbroken, but me being stupid, i went to settings and erased the data. that then caused the phone to crash and basically now it's in recovery mode at all times. before i erased the data, it was the 3.1.3 firmware but i don't know whether it was the new or old bootloader. also i tried numerous things such as trying to restore it through different firmware .ipsw, but it gives me the error code 1942 or something..

is there any solution to this?

thanks!

Good job.
Another one doing the erase all content and settings.
Do you know if the previous owner had any Shsh's saved on cydias server.
If not all you can do is restore to the latest 4.0.1 and wait for a JB and unlock.
Hope you learner something from this.
Never hit that button again and never update a JB and unlocked iphone to official firmware.

Restore to what?
Offcourse you can always restore any iphone to the latest firmware available.
Restoring to anything prior to 4.0.1 will be a challenge unless he got his SHSHs stored.

well, he can try to blindly restore it to 3.1.3 in hopes that he has shsh saved. that's what i would do, and if all else failes...restore to 4.0.1

I'n not sure about this new rash of people erasing content and settings. It must be :apple:'s new anti jailbreaking ploy. Subliminal messages making people want to hit that button and it seems to be working..

I have a theory on why this is suddenly happening. This procedure works flawlessly on the Ipod touch. It erases the data and leaves the FW intact. These may be those who are upgrading from the Ipod touch to a used 3GS.
