Is there any way to control the wifi band that is selects? I am using a router with b/g/n. tests indicate that the max spped it achieves is 10Mb/s which seem to indicate it is connecting a a b device

The only way I know of is to disable bands at the router. Most routers have a setting in the Wireless section where you can set it to B only, G only, N only, sometimes B/G only. Try setting it to G only and see what happens. If you have an iPhone 4 you can try N only but I've found that the iPhone and iPad have trouble connecting to N speed routers and throughput is sluggish.
