iPhone 3GS Won't Restore - Unknown Error

I was given the task of fixing an iPhone 3GS (no water damage) It turns on only when plugged in (battery linked?). If plugged into the computer it gets in a reboot loop, DFU and Recovery work but if you try to restore it gives a 1601 or 1611 error. When plugged into the mains it goes straight to recovery mode. As soon as it's unplugged it loses power.
