iPhone 3GS won't turn on, DFU & Restart not working

Hi, I did some research and tried the suggestions people offered (i.e. DFU and holding home and sleep buttons to restart. No one says how long I need to hold the buttons for, but my fingers were getting tired after holding for 5 minutes. So, my iPhone 3GS still won't turn on, it has plenty of battery. Any one got ideas other than the above mentioned? Greatly appreciated! Gitta

iPhone 3GS just won't turn on at all, unless I'm lucky the apple logo appears for several seconds before shutting off again!
