I noticed that without a tethering plan you cannot view the personal Hotspot menu. But after I switched to a tethering plan, used the Hotspot feature once and deactivated my tethering plan the menu is still available. Can I still use the tethering without paying for the $45/month AT&T Tethering Plan?

What are you smoking? 4.5 is for Verizon and has this feature, but 4.5 isn't even available yet ... 4.3 is for AT&T iPhones and does not have this feature.

I would be shocked if there was not an extra cost for Personal Hotpot feature.

So what would happen if I turn on the personal hot spot? Will it automatically change my plan?

I assume it will be handled exactly like the tethering that has been on the iPhone for over a year. WiFi will simply be an added option to the current Bluetooth and USB support.
If your plan doesn't support tethering, you will not be able to enable it. Instead you will be presented with an option to add it to your plan.

Exactly.
Someone finally got it right:)

4.3 WILL have the hotspot feature, but AT&T has NO plans to offer it at this time. We all know that by 4.5 I meant 4.2.5, chill.

If its included in 4.3 AT&T will likely offer it, for a charge.... included with tethering and probably have a 2GB cap.

I'm sure they'd "chill" if you didnt try to come off like a jerk, but be oh so wrong!

4.5? What are you talking about? 4.3 will be for both GSM and CDMA iPhones and will have Hotspots

4.0 also had tethering but was not turned on for AT&T until much later so it is very possible 4.3 could release with hotspot but not be available on AT&T. Personally, I think AT&T would be stupid to let verizon have an iPhone feature they don't have, but it is certainly possible.

Exactly.
AT&T can't afford to fall behind verizon on this.
Could very well be a deciding selling point to many.

Well but I can still turn it on but I don't have the plan. I just want to know if it's going to charge me?

Yes, if you try to turn it on on stock firmware it will charge you for tethering service and if you got unlimited data you might need to change your plan to a 2GB one.
At least thats what it would do on official firmware, not sure if the beta will allow you to use/test it for free.

I just want to point out that you be clearly informed before any billing changes are made to your account. Simply trying to turn it on will not result in any charges. At least that is the system that is in place now.
Today the system will call AT&T for you to talk to an account rep or forward you to the AT&T website. Turning it on can not be done by accident.

I am sure Verizon will be charging for it, otherwise all those folks who bought Droid X's will be crying very loud. Everyone I know who has the Droid X pays for their Mobile HotSpot, and I am sure AT&T will. In the future they will almost all be giving away the Voice plans, but I am sure they will Nickel and Dime us all to death for everything else.

I do not pay for Tethering now even with an Unlimited Plan, but depending on the cost in the furture I might if it is $10 or less per month.

I am just wondering if AT&T will go back to unlimited data, or Verizon will do what AT&T did after they realize how much bandwidth iPhones suck up.

Will be an interesting next 6 months
