This is the first iPhone that I have ordered direct from AT&T (rather than Apple) and it appears (as per shipping confirm email) that before you activate it on iTunes you have to call AT&T to activate it over the phone.

This does not seem to make sense, because from memory, the phones I bought direct from Apple never required an Apple sales associate to call AT&T before I received it.

Any thoughts?

There is most definitely at least 3 threads on this.

But I will answer anyways :D

All you have to do is plug it into iTunes. That's it. No huss. No fuss.

Thanks, I thought that was the case, as it was with my 3G and 3GS that I bought from Apple, but the email from ATT where I ordered the 4 from specifically says to call them, then plug into iTunes.

Probably because they want to make sure you're okay and don't go through activation troubles because of servers going down. So if they see double charges, etc, they can deal with it then and there.
