I love shooting video on the iphone 4 but the audio is AWEFUL with that auto gain. Is there a way to either disable it or have a interface that you can use other mics with?

I might die and go to heaven if there is.

An app or hardware solution is fine.

IK Multimedia makes the iRig Mic that goes in the headphone jack. There's also the Apogee Mike coming out that goes in the dock connector, which will have better sound.

is there any chance that JAM works with the iphone? I could use an external interface with that if it kills the audio auto gain.

Yes, the Jam works with iPhone 4/4s.

You can use a dynamic mic like a Shure 57/58 or Audix or really anything by using an XLR to 1/4" male cable. The Jam has 40db of gain, but it won't provide phantom power, so you will need an external power supply/pre for some mics.

Finally!

YES!!
this seems like the solution I have been looking for.
Have you used this solution?
You could also use a battery powered mic if you wanted some better power.
I was thinking of using a ZOOM H2 audio interface with it's line out.
Think that could work? 4 channel surround sound for iphone?

Just tested and YES the Jam works with the video camera! (On iOS 5 at least)
Also now works with the built in voice memo app.

If I recall correctly neither of these worked with the Jam pre-iOS 5, but Im not sure. I don't have any devices running iOS 4 to check with though.

Good God, there is a God! Haha I don't currently have a Zoom recorder but I totally get the ****** audio using a DSLR for video. First time I opened voice memo I was expecting at least L R C channels or at least Left and Right but Center only? Come' on Apple....And you could easily get 5.1 dolby once you add in music and work with it then send it to compressor!
