I'm going into the wilderness hiking at the weekend for ~7 days. I'm taking my phone in case of emergency, but I'm also thinking about putting the phone in airplane mode and using it for taking photos. Let's for arguments sake say 20 photos per day.

I doubt I'm going to be able to charge my iPhone while I'm out there, so I wondered if anyone has any experience using the phone like this, with regards to battery life on a single charge.

how long is it likely to last?

Probably 2-4 days if you don't use it that much. Maybe less if you're a real shutter-bug.

I know there are products you can buy that take AA batteries and put out power for iPods/iPhones. You should probably look into getting one of those and charging the phone every other night with it.

My iPhone 3GS easily lasts over a week with airplane mode on, no wi-fi. (I use it as an iPod)

I see no reason why your iPhone 4 with a lot better battery wouldn't.
