iPhone 4 calendar does not lose pre-edited events

When I click on iCal on my iMac and create a "New event" and then edit the wording to state the precise event, and then sync with iPhone calendar, I get 2 events on the iPhone, both occurring at the same time - one called "New event" and the other is the edited event I wanted. If I then edit the proper event on my iMac, and then sync, I then get 3 events on my iPhone. i.e the pre-edited events do not get delete or superseded on the iPhone.

How can I correct this?
