iPhone 4 Camera Problem: Everything is dark

Recently when I open the camera app everything appears dark. As if no light is reaching the camera sensor. When I change quickly from a very bright place (the sun) to a dark place it sometimes corrects itself and everything shows correctly.

Has anyone had this happen?
