iPhone 4 - conference calls -mute microphone with switch

Hi
I often participate in business conference calls with lots of participants.
It's almost a necessity to mute our microphones when we aren't talking, to prevent excessive background noise from ruining the call.

I know I can mute the iPhone microphone from the screen. Is there a way I can make the hardware switch on the side mute the microphone?

My previous non-Apple phone had a very convenient microphone mute that I used a lot.
