My iPhone 4 suffers from the well-known proximity sensor and antenna issues. It drops calls (with on-screen message: "call failed") on some days about 50% of the time.

Today I went to the Apple Store to speak with a genius who ran diagnostics on my phone. It showed 206 calls over the past two weeks, broken down by day, with 0% dropped calls. The genius suggested I was hanging up on accident with my cheek due to the malfunctioning proximity sensor.

Fine, I'd believe that, except for the "call failed" message.

I told him I disagreed with the diagnostics and that without a doubt I had been experiencing countless dropped calls, including when on the phone with AT&T to troubleshoot the problem.

He ended up replacing my phone, but I haven't used it enough yet to know if the reception is any better. The proximity sensor, however, does seem to be behaving properly.

My question is, how accurate are Apple's diagnostics? Why would their test say 0% dropped calls when clearly that's not the case? Phone software problem? Diagnostic software problem? Other?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
