iPhone 4 dock output issue :-(

I got a iPhone 4 dock as a present from my girlfriend. This little thing is expensive and therefore I expect it to work properly. The problem is that, when I have my dock connected via USB to my iMac, and my iPhone is in, I want the output on the back of the dock to output sound when I connect my headset to it... But it does not work at all?!

Any of you guys that know if this is a common issue? Do I have to return it?
Is there any settings I have to change or something? :/
