My wife wanted to but I insisted the we spend the $99 on the 4S instead.

Thesame as all the other iPhones. The phone doesn't affect the contract price. (and it depends not he carrier & plan.)

Just wondering in the US, what the minimum plan cost is required with ATT is for a subsidized iPhone?

Here in Canada its about $55 per month.

I hate when they do those 'deals', they aren't. If you spent $100 or $200 more, you could have a more recent phone with newer features. Imo you might as well get the best model because you'll be using it for 2 years and the monthly bill is already so high.

I think you should at least get the 4S, just because of the speed bump. Between my 4S and my sister's 4, I thought it was very noticeable.

They will "sell" an absolute ton of them. In the US lots and lots of people just look at the up front cost and nothing else. Remember the VZW buy-one-get-one-free deals they used to run on smartphones? Well it made sense for them. Give away a cheap blackberry and get $30 a month for just data on that line for two years. Lots of consumers don't look at what they are actually getting, all they see if they are getting an iPhone for "free".

Personally there is no way I am getting in contract with a two year old phone for another two years.

Perhaps the best announcement was the free phone & the $99 phone. This will increase Apples market share more than some may realize.

Why?

It's the same model they've had for years.

In most countries, the 3GS is available "free", the iPhone 4 costs a bit more and the iPhone 4S costs quite a bit more again.

Before that, they sold the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 in the same manner.

In a few years time the iPhone 5 will be the budget model!

the will sell millions of the I-4.

As said, that works just find for many people. I know many with 3's that are just as happy as could be.

And, as you know, many have flip phones are happy as well.

I think these are dumb from a consumer standpoint. If your going to spend 99 for a 4s why not just spend the 100 more for a 5

Exactly. My 4 is slow for the current times and it's quite obvious that it isn't up to par with the current technology. I may order the 4S for my daughter. She has been wanting an iPhone for a while and school/sports are going well. It may be time. :)

I was surprised by them killing the 3G. I really thought they were going to keep it around for this purpose.

This will, indeed, make a killing on these.

It seems crazy to me to tie yourself for two years to a two year old model when the savings is a small fraction of the total cost of the contract. The loss of functionality today is bad enough, but this may well be the last OS update for the i4, whereas the i5 will still be getting them in another two years.

As enthusiasts we do tend to be opinionated. Yet the fact is the greater majority of iPhone buyers are the general public.

They are Apples target market.

Thus there are millions of financial scenarios that apply. Now in a position to offer a wonderful choice of iPhones from Free all the way up the ladder to full price, is a distinct advantage that Apple did not have in prior years.

What makes sense to you, usually doesn't to the person who doesn't know about things like processors, memory, storage, technical details all of which they don't understand or care about.

They simply want an iPhone. So this year, iPhone sales & market share should exceed everyone's wildest expectations like never before.
