just plugged in my iphone 4 to back it up before setting up my iphone 5 and its gone into recovery mode and it saying i must recover the phone before it can be used, i havent backed up the phone for about 10months and now worried about loosing holiday photos and contacts can anyone suggest a way to fix this please??????

Happened with me yesterday with my 4S and 3GS and i too panicked.

Do this...

1. Hold the POWER and HOME button simultaneously and wait for 10-15 seconds. You should see the APPLE logo on the screen.
2. Once the logo comes, release the POWER button but still keep the HOME button pressed.
3. Leave HOME button after 5-10 seconds and leave the phone on its own.
4. In about 30 seconds to 1 Minute or so your phone will come back to life and exit out of recovery.
