is it normal for the phone to heat up after using it for a while? it gets a bit warm.. and then even a bit uncomfortable to hold after playing a game or on 3g extensively.

I'm on my 3rd.

1st iPhone, I'd leave after full cycle charge & after 20mins, down to 80% & hot as hell!

2nd iPhone, people would say during conversation that it sounded like I was talking down a well.

Touch wood 3rd iPhone after dropping down the toilet, is still going strong after 10months. Thought she was a gonner there but she's holding up well!

Best thing I've owned...MPB in the post..

Mine gets pretty hot as well, but it never gets uncomfortably so. I would think about having a genius taking a look at it if it makes usage uncomfortable.

Mine gets a bit toasty when doing something network heavy like streaming Netflix, and when charging.

There is nothing wrong with his phone. By the sound of it, he's playing games to no end on his phone. If he put down the phone once and a while or didn't use it so much for gaming, the problem would not occur. No point wasting time and taking it to Apple. They will tell you the same thing.
