iPhone 4/iOS 4 Messaging - Orientation Defaults to Last Used

This must be new to iOS 4 but it is quite annoying. Whenever I go into the messaging app to check texts, the orientation defaults to what was last used - usually landscape because that's how I text. But sometimes the message is long and I like viewing it in portrait mode - because the screen real estate is bigger and keeps me from scrolling - and then switching to landscape mode to type.

Is there a setting to change this?

Rotate your phone? I think more people would find it annoying if it DIDN'T default to "last used" orientation
