iphone 4 not connecting to my mac, and cant download latest itunes

Hello

As my username suggests im not very tech savvy. Ive been trying to connect my iphone4 to my mac (10.4.1.1) and it wont recognise it in Itunes or even on my computer. It says that my mac meets minimum requirements but i cant get the latest itunes.

Any help or whatever would be really helpful!
