iPhone 4 not syncing with iTunes

I have an iPhone 4 on 5.0.1, the newest version on iTunes and a Macbook with lion. I tried plugging in my iPhone to sync it and it does not sync. It started the sync by backing up but it doesn't not go any farther than that. None of my music of apps will sync. Any help?
