Iphone 4 Pic Messaging file size max?

I tried to send a pic using the text message on my Iphone 4. The file size is about 2MB-2.5MB (5 Megapixel resolution from my digital camera 2594x1944) and it would take 4 attemts b4 it works. What is the maximum text message file size I can send from my Iphone 4? Also do you need to have the setting on for setting>general>network>Enable3G and Cellular Data, if your using wifi?
