How long after the release of the iPhone 4s were the iPhone4/3GS available at a reduced rate from Apple. Immediately or was there some delay?

Am purchasing a 4/4S as a gift (start of September Birthday) but want to wait til the new iPhone comes out (a month wouldnt hurt too much) and hopefully the 4S will cost the same as the 4 does now.

I assume, but could be wrong the the models will shuffle down in price. I may be wrong but as long as the wait isn't too long I think its worth it.

It's historically reduced in price the same day the new phone is released.

Of course, it should also be noted that the price drop also usually comes with a severe drop in storage space... one that is worth the extra $100 (on contract) alone.

If the 4S were to follow the same trend and drop down to 8GB, even the average user would find themselves constantly out of space.

Thanks for the replies. Its for my dad so 8GB should do him fine, he wont have much, if any music on it and I doubt any videos or large apps/games. Hopefully the 4S will drop to the price the 4 is now as he likes the idea of Siri :)

If the launch happens on the 12th that would be ideal.

Going by historic pricing, $99 for a 4S (on contract) will be a great deal. Also, it's gonna have free native GPS!

Current rumour is announcement 12th, then launch 21st.

What generally happens is the current models are immediately reduced in price by $50 (after announcement). Once the phone is launched, these models continue to stay $50 cheaper "than they were" until they sell out. A new model, with much less storage space, goes on sale for $99.

The true question here is whether or not Apple will make an 8GB 4S. That's really pushing things if you ask me. With how large apps have gotten due to being retina capable (and some that are iPad retina capable now too) 8GB is going to be a tight squeeze. My 16GB is bursting at the seams for sure!

Not to mention the larger, 8MP, camera in the 4S that also burns through space quicker than the 4.

Very good point about the 8GB/16GB issue. The 3GS and 4 available now from the Apple Store are both 8GB so it will be interesting to see what they do. At this stage, I'm going to wait and see.

Thanks everyone for the replies, very useful info.

Will the iPhone 4 be lowered to the current iPhone 3GS price?

That was my hope but the 8GB/16GB comments above mean things might not be so simple.
