iPhone 4 (AT&T) with iOS 5.1.1

First, let me acknowledge that I understand the rear camera is supposed to have a "rattle"—for lack of better terms—when it's in perfect working condition. But that is NOT what this thread is about...

Last week, I dropped my iPhone (it has a decently protective case), and since that day, the rear camera has not been able to focus. I understand I probably damaged the camera when dropping it, and I already bought a replacement part and plan to fix it myself using instructions from iFixit.com.

What this thread is about: since I dropped the iPhone and broke the camera I have noticed something strange. It no longer has that "rattle" I mentioned above, which makes sense since it's not loose and able to focus. But what's weird, when it is in "locked" or "standby" mode, it makes two distinct clicks approximately 10 seconds apart, every 5 minutes or so.

My question is this: What is written into the iOS that is accessing the camera every 5 minutes?

Does it recalibrate itself every 5 minutes? Or are there photos being taken and sent to some secret server somewhere? (ridiculous conspiracies, i know...)
