iPhone 4 'red battery' not working

So I know that the iPhone 4 is pretty old now but I'd like to get it working. It's basically stuck on the red battery icon when I put it on to charge. When off it just has the symbol asking to be plugged into power. I have tried multiple cables and it still doesn't work. Just wondering whether someone has encountered this problem before. I think it's either the battery or the connector. Before I go ahead and order the part, just wondering whether someone had an easy fix?
