Iphone 4 secured browsing issue?

I tried my best but could not get gmail working in my iphone. I then installed a third party app that syncs info from facebook. That too did not work till I changed my security settings in fb and turned off secured browsing.

This made me think if there is an issue with the iphone wrt apps that try to draw info from secured accounts. Or am I missing something and something needs to be enabled from settings?
